Schubert String Quintet

The Danel Quartet are celebrated interpreters of Schubert and Russian repertoire, as they demonstrated last year in the astonishing ensemble, lyricism, intensity, and rhythmic drive of their Shostakovich cycle.

They return to CMF with a programme of equal intensity. Schubert’s String Quintet is one of the great works of chamber music, famous for its transcendental slow (second) movement. A simple, otherworldly hymn where time seems to stop, then erupts into a violent middle section before returning to its serene opening.

Though Polish rather than Russian, Weinberg shared a close artistic and personal bond with Shostakovich. His String Quartet No. 7 is poignant and introspective, coloured by Jewish folk influences and sudden dramatic outbursts.
